Laboratory for GMO and food biosafety

Team: Adaleta Durmić-Pašić, PhD, Head of Laboratory; Jasmina Čakar, PhD; Elma Silajdžić, MSc; professor Kasim Bajrović, supervisor.

According to the decision of the Governing Board of the Institute for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Laboratory for Plant Biotechnology was transformed into the Laboratory for GMO and Food Biosafety. Activities of Laboratory are divided in three segments:

Research work:

  • In vitro conservation of endemic and endangered plant fond,

  • Antibacterial, antimykotic, antitumor, antioxidative and genotoxic activity of native substances,

  • Genetic mechanisms of plant morphogenesis.

Service:

  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of foodstuff to the presence of DNA of specific origin,

  • DNA identification of bacterial types included in processes of production and degradation of foodstuff.

Promotions:

  • Advisory work in expert team to make draft law on GMO in B&H.

  • Promotion of the need for development of biosafety and GMO testing systems

  • Dissemination of information about the achievements and potentials of genetic engineering and modern biotechnology.

Laboratory for GMO and Food Biosafety has capacities for performing many analyses, such as:

  • Detection on the presence of pork origin DNA in food products,

  • Detection on the presence of animal origin DNA (beef, mutton, kid, bird) in feed,

  • DNA identification of bacterial types,

  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the presence of GMOs in food products at the DNA and protein level,

  • Identification of GMOs present in food products

Scientific - research activities

Long-termed projects of Laboratory:

  • Development of biosafety and testing systems for GMOs

  • Antibacterial, antimykotic, antitumor, antioxidative and genotoxic activity of native plant extracts

  • Establishment of tissue culture for producing plants resistant to biotic and abiotic factors.

Realized projects
